The trick with the user variable does not work on MySQL 8.0+ and MariaDB 10.2+ because the optimizer is smarter and decide to do the ordering before the grouping [0]. As noted in the MySQL manual this behavior is expected [1] and developers should not consider the order in which the operations are executed to be determinate.
