    make test fails with newer PHP versions
    While working on the Debian packaging (where it's good practice to run the upstream test suite), I noticed that "make test" would not work with the current version of PHP in Debian Wheezy (5.4.4).

    $ make test
    PHP Fatal error: Directive 'allow_call_time_pass_reference' is no longer available in PHP in Unknown on line 0
